It is very surprising to find out that a large part of the world is still unaware of the interesting places that are available to them. Some people think they know a country or a continent just because they have been there once or twice, and return home with enough satisfaction from being able to say they went there. Trieste is one good example. This city located on the northeast of Italy is so underrated that even though various Hollywood movie makers have chosen this place as the setting of their films, people still fail to recognize the beauty of this historic city.
Divided into seven provinces, Trieste is a port-city that houses one of the most famous seaport in Europe. The existence of the port suggests that the city's livelihood depends on its trading activities, which have been going on since 1930s. Even more than trading, Trieste is slowly becoming the hottest tourist spot for its unique beauty and architecture. Once ruled by Julius Caesar during the Roman conquest, Trieste contains a number of historical castle and sites each with a story of their own. Despite being a beautiful town all on its own, Trieste is also known for places that you just cannot miss if you ever went there.
The first one is the Piazza Unita d'Italia or the Unity Italy Square. This is basically a large plaza with wide open that faces the Adriatic Sea. Dubbed as Europe's largest square by the sea, this gathering field was built back in the days where Trieste was the main port of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. Today it houses the city's municipal buildings as well as some of the palaces of Trieste. The buildings here are treasured as historical artifacts of the world, and have been officiated to never be demolished. If you ever set foot here, make sure to visit it twice on your trip; once during the day, and the other at night, so you can be blown away by its majestic beauty.
Castello Miramare or the Miramare Castle is tourists' favorite pick when visiting Trieste. Contracted by the Archduke Maximillian, this castle is located on the seafront around the outskirts of the city. This castle was inhabited by famous historical figures, including Prince Amedeo, the last commander of the Italian forces during the Second World War. Housing the most beautiful inner garden in the whole city, the Miramare Castle is decorated with specific flowers and plants that were deemed worthy to accessorize the stronghold.
Since Trieste is born with important historical artifacts, most of the buildings there come from specific lineage and back story. This includes the various houses of worship available in the city. Most of these are churches dating back to their Roman architectures, and are heavily decorated with heavy senses of visual art. One such church is the St. Justus cathedral, located near another famous castle of Trieste, the Castel San Giusto. Some suggest that this cathedral has a history that ranges to as far as 1320. Even if you are not into beautiful buildings, surely you can at least appreciate this scenic town that lies on water.
